Museums, Fun and Dumplings

So yesterday was trip day, this week it was Gu Chengtai Elementary! We were going to the the Qinghai Biological society museum and the Qinghai provincial museum and Will would be coming with us. To say I was dreading this day would be an understatement. I mean 6-13 year olds in a museum and Will. What's good about that arrangement??

Anyway we went into town and met up with the school and headed towards the biological museum, Will and I keeping a wide berth. Luckily the kids were excited, we walked in and there were stuffed animals and birds everywhere! The kids loved it and their excitement was contagious. After what seemed like hundreds of photos we emerged and began our walk to the provincial museum. I got the ball out and the kids had fun chasing it around Qinghai square. The museum had lots of exhibits about Qinghai culture and Tibet, it was interesting but most of it was lost on me. I spent most of the time on child control, especially of Chris. Chris is the teacher's son and a bundle of energy...

Mrs Wan (the teacher I work with at Gu Chengtai) asked Will and I to come to her house to make dumplings that afternoon which we were both eager to do. We dropped the kids off at school and the headteacher insisted on taking us out to lunch at this really posh restaurant, they ordered us a mix of Chinese food such as lotus, and some Western food because they thought we might be missing it. PASTA! It was an amazing meal and I was stuffed by the end of it! We still had Chris with us so Will gave him his phone and Angry Birds to play with, it kept him occupied!

We had to stop in at the hospital because Mrs Wan had an appointment, she left Chris with Will and I so we went for a wander with him. Chris seemed more interested in Angry Birds than anything else... We must have looked quite odd, two white guys holding hands with a Chinese 7 year old. It was fun though! Sitting in the car was an interesting experience though, Chris is a wriggler. He wouldn't sit still and seeing as though he was armed with a spray gun filled with liquid sugar we ended up very sticky... He also kept spitting out of the window and missing, this was unfortunate for Will but I found it hilarious...

Next we went shopping for ingredients, Mrs Wan found a place so Will could get some trousers mended and found a shoe shop for me! The shoes almost fit too! They were long enough just not wide enough, watching them measure my feet was hilarious. They couldn't believe how big they were!

After a while we headed to Mrs Wan's apartment, it was a beautiful. It was small though seeing as she lived their with her husband, Chris and Chris' Grandmother. We got told to rest as Mrs Wan and the grandmother began the initial preparations for making dumplings. Will and I offered to help but seeing as their entire kitchen was the size of a toilet cubicle we gave up. Chris stuck some Chinese cartoons on which were rather strange and I think I fell asleep for a little bit.

Eventually all the preparation was done and it was time to assemble the dumplings! We were joined by Mrs Wan's friend and her son Ding Dong... Yep that was his name. Assembling dumplings was great fun and not as fiddly as I thought it would be.

Before I know it we are eating freshly made and cooked fried dumplings! It was great but we made far too many!! They were delicious though!

We had some fruit beer which Will gave to Ding Dong (who is 7 by the way!!), then they offered us some wine which I turned down. It was a lovely meal, the grandmother gave us some tea to thank us for coming and we thanked her profusely for having us. We then were driven back to the complex with a very tired and probably a bit drunk Ding Dong.

Overall a fantastic day and Will was ok to hang out with!
