Pretty Summer Palace

OUR FIRST FREE DAY!! ABOUT TIME TOO!!

I was up and raring to go at 830 (despite getting in at 1), hangover free and excited for the day ahead. I was tagging along with a group who were heading to the Summer Palace in West Beijing, after a lot of confusion we managed to get on the right bus towards San Yuan Qiao subway station and on our way to the palace. After travelling for something like an hour and 45 minutes we arrived less than enthusiastic and hungry! Sadly the only place around was KFC so we decided an early lunch was in order; I guess we were running on TTC time (breakfast 7-8, lunch 11-12, dinner 5-6)! After an overly expensive and less than pleasant lunch we headed towards the palace entrance!

The Summer Palace served the Qing Dynasty as an imperial retreat from the Forbidden City in summer. It was finished in 1795 and was destroyed and rebuilt twice; once after it was destroyed by English and French troops in 1860 and again in 1902 after the Boxer Rebellion.

It was amazing! The building so beautiful and all of its lakes were frozen solid! It was a long day with a hell of a lot of walking but was so worth it!
