Good Evening!
Sorry for the lack of blog posts recently, its been a turbulent couple of days.
Yesterday Teach and Travel China announced where in China everyone has been placed, well everyone except me and a few others. This was a bit of a blow as I was (and still are) desperate to know where I am going and what age group I am teaching but I have been assured that it is nothing that I have done.
I am worried though as many people have got very different age groups to what they asked for (some asked for Kindergarten and got given university!!!). I just want to know! Things here at CAMIC have changed completely overnight, I think it has hit everyone that they may not see their friends again. I know it has certainly hit me pretty hard as I have made some pretty good friends here. All my friends seem happy with their placements (most are either in Chengdu or Guangzhou, both in the South), though Owen is a bit disgruntled as he didn't get the placement he wanted. I can't believe people leave on Saturday! I could be stuck here for anything up to a fortnight!
To try and cheer me up my friends asked me to come to the Beijing Silk Market with them yesterday. I was really excited until I arrived and realised it was basically a massive shopping centre that mostly sold clothes... Needless to say I quickly got bored of looking at designer clothes with the guys and girls. One of the saleswoman said she had clothes my size and she got her tape measure out; she quickly realised that she couldn't reach around me (she had to get a friend). I got told that there was nothing for me there and was ushered out of the store. Obviously this made me feel tremendous and added to my already good mood (imagine that sentence is dripping with sarcasm.). I didn't leave empty handed though, I got some really nice chopsticks. Bartering is fun though! Originally she wanted 650RMB for a set of 2 pairs and I managed to get her down to 160RMB for 2 sets of 2, still got ripped off but what can you do.
Katheryn, a couple of guys and I decided to go out for dinner to the local greasy spoon (which is the only local place to get nice real CHINESE food) so that cheered me up no end. We then came back and had more than a few drinks together (I would like to point out that I have only been out drinking once since I came to CAMIC, the rest of the times have been in our rooms...). Everyone went out clubbing but I decided to head to bed.
Mandarin started again this morning which was nice though I had gotten out of the habit of getting up to be in class at 8am. Katheryn and I hung out together the rest of the day which was nice, neither of us felt up to do anything and the smog was really bad today. As both of us have almost run out of money on our food cards (how we get food from the canteen) we decided on the Chinese equivalent to pot noodles for dinner. I am telling you this, England has nothing on China in this department. SO NICE and pretty cheap too 3.5RMB (35p).
We settled down to watch Blazing Saddles this evening which was HILARIOUS and then we played cards for a while which was really nice.
I am hoping to head back to the Forbidden City tomorrow and go inside this time so keep posted. Oh and if I hear anything about placements I will let you guys know!
Anyway it is definitely time for bed.
Good Night!
